Traditional Ugandan Basket - Light

This beautiful basket is handwoven in Uganda, Africa. Using indigenous raffia and millet fibers, this basket is woven with tight coils to produce this striking design. Raffia is a light fiber that is removed from the rear of a long palm like leaf. Its length makes it an ideal material for basket weaving. Raffia can be dyed into almost any colour using natural materials. These baskets are traditionally used for serving food.

Approximately 12-13 inches diameter, 2-3 inches deep. Assorted 'light' colors Each basket has a unique pattern and color scheme. The women who weave these baskets are either disabled, widowed or otherwise economically disadvantaged and are employed by the Fair Trade cooperative Uganda Crafts.
